Skins

Ok, before I start going on about my latest TV obsession, I may as well admit that so far, I've been writing about things that interested me because my daily life itself is very boring right now. I'm unemployed and skint, and spend my days alternately job-hunting, getting discouraged, perusing Facebook and writing this blog. And occasionally speaking to Nans and playing with the cat.

Yesterday brought a break from the routine: Nans found a job. In Mc Donald's. I know, I know, but really, they're quite selective these days. They probably wouldn't have taken me. And Nans actually likes working at Mc Donald's. He's a people person (most of the time), works well under pressure and he especially likes the free meals. After six months of unemployment, we were ecstatic. My turn next.

We also went out with some friends for the first time in ages. Since christmas I think. The pub was Irish (there are dozens of them in Grenoble) and we may be going back next Tuesday, when apparently there's a group that play Irish music. I'd love to see that. Might bring my tin whistle. ^^

Which explains why I'm so happy today. Nans started work this morning at half eight, and on top of that my youngest sister is coming over for the weekend. She's only nine, but I love her to bits.

Anyway, back to today's subject: Skins. The other reason I'm so happy today is because I completely forgot that Skins was on last night in England at ten (therefore eleven o'clock here) and it was a pleasant surprise to find, when I went on Youtube this morning, that the latest episode had been put up. I am completely obsessed with Skins ever since a friend of my sister's (my other sister, who is 15) brought the DVDs of the first series round while I was visiting and we watched them together. I quickly found the second series, plus all the Unseen episodes and video diaries, and devoured them.

For those of you who have never watched it, the idea is simple: it's about a group of friends doing their A-Levels in a college in Bristol. Each episode is named after a certain person, or sometimes two people, or sometimes everyone, and you get to see into the life of whoever's episode it is, all while keeping track of what's going on in everyone else's.

The first two seasons covered the two years spent in college, at the end of which they all go off to uni. At this point the series leaves it there to follow the "second generation" of Skins characters, all of them new apart from two girl, the little sister of one of the old characters and her best friend. You'd think this was quite a dangerous move to make, and it would disappoint the viewers - I had serious doubts - but it's brilliant. You get attached to the second gen characters very quickly. And because of the change in characters, you can start watching the third season without having seen the first two, and it won't matter. Though I still recommend seeing all of them in order. :)

The themes mentioned range from sex and drugs to religion, passing through homosexuality, stalking, disability, teen pregnancy, death, class differences, careers, and just about every problem you could possibly have with your parents. It is funny, serious, exaggerated, realistic, moving and immensely complex. Lots of psychology. Exactly the way I like it.
