This is slowly but surely becoming a cooking blog. I made my first loaf of home-made bread today, and I'm proud to say that it is a success. Well, it's a success for me and my darling sister Nanette. Nans doesn't like it because it's wholemeal, but since when does he like anything remotely healthy?
Recipe for small loaf of home-made bread (taken off the packet of leavening):
- wholemeal flour (250g)
- leavening (10g) bought in a health food shop
- salt (tps)
- water (about 130ml)
Mix 'em all up until you get a sort of gooey dough. I think I added a bit too much water, so I added more flour until it didn't stick any more. Knead by hand into a dough ball, then cover the bowl and leave it for half an hour. Kneed it again into the form you want this time, then cover again and leave it for an 60 - 90 mins this time. Put it in the oven at 200 - 230°C for 45 mins. I have no idea how to prevent the bottom of the bread from being carbonized, I just scraped that bit off, but I promise I'll let you know when I find out.
Nanette is round until tomorrow night, then we're going back to my parents' house to see them until Sunday or Monday. We'll be going round to see Nans' dad while we're at it, and we might (but probably won't) go and see his brother, who just became a daddy on Monday. It might be too early to go yet.
Either way we won't have to worry about Nans losing his job, they sacked him on Tuesday night. Apparently they're refurbishing the restaurant and they're only keeping the workers they've had for over a year, so it's not his fault, but get this - they said he was too enthusiastic. Come on! Most people who work in Mc Donald's make you want to slit your wrists just looking at them. I got sacked from Mc Donald's for not smiling enough when I was 19. (and I was clinically depressed at the time). How can you be too enthusiastic?!!
He was enthusiastic enough about leaving, although he didn't like that they sacked him. Despite the advantages (mostly you get more money from the state than if you quit), I think it was like getting dumped by someone you were working up the courage to dump yourself. Ay vay, it's back to the starting block for him. I won't miss him smelling of stale chips though...
